The bunch of songs presented here are of diverse styles, colors and moods. Yet, they have pretty much in common. They are all ballads, and those of the songs which are not “proper” ballads by definition, are spiced with at least a hint of what gives a correct ballad its sweet tragic flavor – either constant repetitions of textual or melodic structures, epic nostalgia or cruelty of theme. Observing them as such, enabled me to place all of them freely under one umbrella, and as far as I can tell – they seem to belong together. Thus the sounds to be heard on this album span from “lyric punk” (for example in Doina), to quasi ancient music sound, through nearly authentic lautari style (as in The Black Fringed Scarf) to “cheap” cabaret and from the “normal” Ashkenazi folk- to the European art song.
